How the Munchkin Movement came about
First, listen to the Mayor of Munchkin City.
Dorothy has just landed in Oz, killing the Wicked Witch of the East.
“Then this is a day of Independence,
For all the Munchkins and their descendants,
Let the glorious news be spread,
The wicked old witch at last is dead!”
I’m Roderick and I’m the Founder of the Munchkin Movement.
Back in my Uni Days I played the role of Mayor of Munchkin City in a run of The Wizard of Oz performed by the Students’ Union musical society.
Those were the days!
Little did I know then the later importance of this scene verifying the death of the Wicked Witch of the East and welcoming Dorothy.
You see, it serves as an allegory for the world of work today and what the Munchkin Movement sets out to change.
- The world has become increasingly transactional (“do this to get that”),
- The world is increasingly obsessed with money,
- Work (the delivery of value towards a common goal) has become over-monetised and increasingly hard to find,
- Work has become almost exclusively something we do for a small group of shareholders or owners,
- It has also been reduced down to component parts (turning job seeking into a niche marketing task),
- Yet a human brings his/her entire personality and skills to their job,
- Which means the world of work today is an incredible waste of human talent (even more so if you’re unemployed),
- Around 80% of employees go to work just to earn a pay check which implies a huge waste of human energy that could be used to greater benefit for the world.
How does the Munchkin Movement change this?
The Munchkin Movement is a global movement to bring good back into the world through community, relationships, gratitude and service.
